LocalSend is great — but it requires an app on every device. ShareByWiFi does the same thing in any browser, plus adds remote sharing your whole team can use.
Start Sharing FreeLocalSend is a genuinely excellent open-source tool for transferring files between devices on the same network. It is fast, private, and free. But it requires every device to have the app installed. On your own personal devices that is fine. But in a classroom with 30 students, an office meeting room, or a situation where you are handing files to someone else's device — asking people to install an app first is a real barrier.
ShareByWiFi solves that problem. It works identically to LocalSend for local network sharing, but runs entirely in the browser. No install needed on any device.
For same-network sharing, ShareByWiFi's Network Room works exactly like LocalSend — all devices on the same WiFi see the shared room automatically and can upload or download files without any configuration. The key difference is that it runs in a browser tab, so any device with Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge can use it with zero setup.
ShareByWiFi also goes further with Private Rooms — a feature LocalSend simply does not have. Create a private session, share the link or QR code, and people outside your local network can join and access your files too.
To be fair — if you are transferring files between your own devices at home and you are happy to install an app once, LocalSend is an excellent choice. It is open source, fast, and has no server dependency since it works peer-to-peer over your local network.
But when you need to share with others — especially in group settings or across different networks — ShareByWiFi is the simpler, more flexible solution. Try both and use what fits your situation.
Open sharebywifi.com on any device. No install, no account, no configuration. If you are on the same WiFi as another open tab, you are already connected.
